The baseline every sampler builds on: take a recording, and play it faster or slower to
change its pitch. Rate 2^((note − root)/12) gives equal temperament — but
speeding a sample up shortens it and shifts its formants, which is why a voice sampled at
C3 sounds like a chipmunk two octaves up. Set the root to the note the
