Xenakis's idea: stop composing individual notes and start composing the statistics of a swarm. Thousands of tiny grains arrive over time; you don't place them, you set the distributions they're drawn from — how often they come, how their pitches scatter around a centre, how loud. A uniform spread is flat and even; a Gaussian clusters into a tone; exponential arrivals give a natural, Poisson-random patter; Cauchy flings wild outliers.
